Drive & Slam

Here it is!

I am fortunate enough to know the maker of Planet 123 and he is an NBA nut like us. So he was kind enough to setup a site for us to play DTTF, and I will help him maintain it.

Features:

  • Multipliers! -- remember 1-N-Done?
  • Points, rebounds and assists -- as usual
  • Blocks and steals -- by popular demand
  • Dynasty -- one account forever; see your stats each year

The site is still barebones at the moment but we're looking to jazz it up later.

Go on and sign up now here, and just get back here for talks :)

Fun continues!

  1. For those in fantasypostseason (FPS) and those using Google Sheets, please continue with them. This Drive & Slam may not support some of the features that FPS and Sheets can provide. So keep 'em intact. Post here in the comments as well so I can join them.

  2. For those who don't like multipliers and/or blocks-steals, I'll see if I can have Drive & Slam provide an option (separate leaderboard maybe). But no promises.

Multiplers -- I personally like them. ESPN's 1-N-Done a few years ago provided that and it really forces players to pick wisely. No LeBron in Round 1 ;)

Blocks and steals -- Back in the day of the NBA DTTF forums and here in the comments throughout the years, some players requested for these to be added to PRA. Some like it, some don't. For me, it's a grey area, but I think it's harmless. With low number of steals and blocks per game, I doubt they pull down (or up) the usual PRA stats too much.

  3. I've signed up. My group is going Google Drive for this year, so I'll consider this the beta test for the new site to see if it makes more sense for next year.

I'm all for the idea of PRABS. I personally prefer PRA, but it doesn't make a huge difference, and since I'm doing the Google Drive, it will be nice to have a different experience for each one that I do.

I'm not sure how I feel about the multiplier. I'll be interested in trying it, and I think it will make for some fun discussion. I like how it forces you to make smarter decisions early, which makes strategy even more important. However, my complaint is that is seems to promote over-conservatism of players against more risky strategy, and that is unfortunate. I feel most people could be playing too similar of a game. Instead of making a big move in hopes of catching the big game, the risk might not be worth it to always picking the near sure thing. I'll provide an example:

Last year, on the first day, I started with Aldridge, taking a slight risk in the 4 vs. 5 match-up in hopes that I had it right and getting the big game, which I did. With the multiplier, that is almost never going to be the play, for fear of risking Aldridge over the easy pick from an 8 or 7 seed, as to gain a bit this round could cost you double that amount next round if you are wrong.

The other potential issue is that it diminishes what you get in the first round, arguably the most fun and crazy round of the playoffs, compared to what you get later on.

On the flip side, it's possible that the multiplier creates some outside the box strategies I've never thought of, or rewards people who risk it big and win amidst a pool of people who are playing ultra conservatism. So with my skepticism, I also consider the possibility that there could be a richness in strategy that I never imagined. So I'm excited to find out.

    1. Tangent, is there any way I can be a part of your Google Drive setup? I'd like to participate in all the various formats this year. Please let me know!

    2. I believe so. Right now we are working on a second one so that a couple people from the blog can try it out, so I'll keep you posted.

    3. Yup, I should have the second one ready to go by some point tomorrow. Tangent and I will co-manage it, so we'll be in charge of making sure it all runs smoothly.

Taong, we'd love for you to be a part of this as well. If anyone else is interested, just shoot me a message (my username @gmail.com) or answer this with your email address. We'll keep it somewhat limited for the first year, so first come first serve.

    1. That's my question as well. At what point can we invite others to join a particular group within Drive & Slam?

    2. They're working in the invite feature.

  5. Super excited and thankful for this Taong! Will the site have live stats tracking like DTTF did?

  6. We're prioritizing the features necessary for the gameplay. Of course I want all the features and more, but essentials first. Whatever form this year's Drive & Slam takes, it will sure be better going forward. DTTF didn't really change a bit in it's 6 years existence. This will accumulate features as we go.

For live stats, I want it there but prolly not soon.

  9. Hi there,
When will the schedule be updated? And we can make our picks.

  10. Eh I wanna play but I really don't like the multipliers, puts way to much emphasis on guessing which teams move on and forces you into a much more predictable strategy (no more using big names like a Curry early over a scrub on a team about to lose, cause now you have to wait to get his full multiplier or your screwed), wish it was just the same rules as DTTF which we all loved, steals and blocks are fine though doesn't really change anything

  11. started a league here and hope it works out. Nba.com is nuts for dropping this fantasy contest
